On the evening of May 19, 2023, while on duty and assigned to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Central Region in St. Augustine, Sergeant Michael Kunovich made contact with a subject he observed sitting in the dark outside a closed business. He attempted a pat down to check for weapons and the subject pulled away and attempted to flee. Additional deputies arrived and the subject continued to resist. While fighting on the ground, the subject attempted to grab Sergeant Kunovich’s Taser and continued to violently resist for approximately 6 minutes and 19 seconds. After he was handcuffed, the subject armed himself with a pocket knife, which was forcefully removed by deputies. Sergeant Kunovich collapsed moments after the subject was disarmed and relentless lifesaving measures were initiated by St. Johns County Fire Rescue and Flagler Health+ personnel. He was ultimately pronounced deceased shortly after transport to Flagler Hospital.

Sergeant Kunovich had served with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office for 25 years.

Our team will honor Sergeant Kunovish during our 2024 Brotherhood Ride.

Thank you for your generous support! Our organization is entirely composed of volunteers, who are themselves, emergency responders: firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel.  Other than the cost of conducting the rides, all donated proceeds go directly to the beneficiaries designated.  No one is compensated for their time in order to maximize the impact of donations. Your gift will directly benefit the families of fallen heroes, emergency responders who have given their lives while trying to protect the lives and properties of others. With your help, we can continue to show the families, friends and their community that their loved ones will not be forgotten!

The Brotherhood Ride is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt organization designated by the Internal Revenue Code. Our tax identification number is 33-1187088.
